Product Description SEO: Write Descriptions That Rank and Sell
· 7 min read
Product description SEO is where two jobs meet: the copy has to persuade a buyer, and the page has to be findable by a search engine that has never seen the product. Most listings do one job or neither — persuasive text on a page Google cannot categorise, or keyword-stuffed text no human finishes. This guide goes through the fields that decide ranking, in the order a search engine reads them, and the writing habits that keep the copy worth reading.
Start with one focus keyword per product
Product description SEO begins before any writing: choose the one phrase a buyer types when they want this product — usually the product type plus its defining detail («non-slip yoga mat 6mm», not just «yoga mat»). That phrase is the page's focus keyword, and every field below serves it.
One keyword per product page, and a different one for the next product. When five listings chase the same phrase, they compete with each other and the store's weakest version of the page is what ranks.
The five fields product description SEO lives in
A search engine reads a product page as fields, not as a blob of text. The title carries the focus keyword first. The meta title (what the results page shows) keeps it under roughly 60 characters with the key detail. The meta description, 150–160 characters, is the pitch that earns the click — main benefit plus keyword, written for a person skimming ten results.
The URL slug stays short and keyword-based (…/products/non-slip-yoga-mat-6mm), and every product image gets alt text that describes the image in the buyer's words. Skip any field and the page competes with a hand tied: platforms fill blanks with defaults, and defaults are the same for every store.
- Focus keyword: one per product, in the buyer's own words
- Meta title: keyword first, key detail, ~60 characters
- Meta description: benefit + keyword, 150–160 characters
- URL slug: short, hyphenated, keyword-based
- Image alt text: describes the real image, never invented
The description itself: unique, benefit-led, complete
Inside the page, product description SEO asks for three things. Unique text — the supplier paragraph your competitors also pasted gives Google nothing new to rank. The focus keyword used the way a human would write it: in the title, near the start, in a heading, and a few natural times after. And completeness — the sizing, materials and contents questions answered on the page, because a page that answers the searcher's real question is the one that holds its ranking.
Length follows the product, not a rule: a simple accessory needs less than a sized garment. What never helps is padding — repeated claims and stuffed keywords read badly, and pages that read badly do not convert the traffic they win.
Duplicate supplier text is the most common SEO failure
If your description is the manufacturer's paragraph, your page is a copy of a page that already exists — often on a marketplace with far more authority than your store. Rewriting from the product's facts is not extra credit; it is the entry ticket. Keep the numbers traceable to the source, translate features into benefits, and let the keyword work happen in the fields built for it instead of by repeating phrases in the copy.
Product description SEO, generated with the listing
The fields above are mechanical enough to generate and important enough not to skip — which is why Funlag ships them with every listing. Give the optimizer a product photo or a link to the product's page, and each generation returns the title, description, tags and targeting plus a complete SEO pack: the focus keyword, meta title, meta description, URL slug and image alt text for the product's images, all derived from the product's own facts and flagged where a fact could not be verified. Product description SEO stops being a separate chore you postpone, and becomes part of publishing the product.
Try it on your own products
Funlag turns a product photo — or a link to the product on any store or marketplace — into a complete, editable listing: title, description, tags, targeting and a full SEO pack, with unsupported facts flagged instead of invented. Start free with 5 generations in the Listing Optimizer, see how it works as a Shopify product description generator, and compare plans when you need more generations.
